Thirty-one Remain In Contention For The Coral Gold Cup

The 2024 Coral Gold Cup Acceptors are out, with some big contenders still looking to take on the feature race.

Thirty-one remain in contention for the 2024 renewal of the Coral Gold Cup on Saturday 30th November following the latest confirmation stage today. Featured amongst the thirty-one entries in the £250,000 contest includes one French entrant and three potential Irish raiders.

Having initially entered six in the race, Paul Nicholls now has four potential contenders in top weight Bravemansgame, Ginny’s Destiny, Kandoo Kid and Inch House, with neither Stay Away Fay nor Stage Star being left in the race today.

A yard currently in top form, Dan Skelton’s team are operating at a 21% strike rate. All five of his potential runners were left in this year’s Coral Gold Cup following the latest scratching stage. He could be represented by Grey Dawning, Midnight River, Galia des Liteaux, Shan Blue and Heltenham.

Three potential Irish raiders remain in the line-up including the Henry de Bromhead trained Senior Chief, a recent winner at Cheltenham on his seasonal reappearance. Champion trainer, Willie Mullins holds one entry with Horantzau d’Airy whilst the Eddie & Patrick Harty trained Grandero Bello could make the trip over and have his first run on British soil for owners based locally to Newbury. The sole French entry comes from the yard of Noel George and Amanda Zetterholm who have the recent Grade 3 Prix de la Gascogne winner, General En Chef entered.

Willie Twiston-Davies, assistant to father Nigel, is hoping Broadway Boy becomes a flag-bearer for their Cotswolds based yard this season. The three time Cheltenham winner remains on target for Newbury’s showpiece premier handicap. Jamie Snowden knows what is required to win a Coral Gold Cup having trained Datsalrightgino to an emphatic victory in 2023. He has another exciting prospect for the same ownership group, The GD Partnership, in Colonel Harry who ran well on his seasonal reappearance at Carlisle.

Colonel Harry and Senior Chief are the sponsor’s 8-1 joint favourites for the Coral Gold Cup, ahead of Broadway Boy at 10-1, following the latest entry stage for the Newbury showpiece.

“Colonel Harry made an encouraging reappearance to finish second at Carlisle recently, while Senior Chief was an impressive Cheltenham winner, and that pair currently head the market for this year’s Coral Gold Cup,” said Coral’s David Stevens.

“Although Chianti Classico has been left in the race, his trainer Kim Bailey has stated he’s very unlikely to line up at Newbury, so we’ve removed the one time favourite from the betting,” added Stevens.
