A Coral Gold Cup Ride For The History Books

Winning jockey Sam Thomas takes a lap around Newbury Racecourse, recounting his memories of the 2007 Denman win that made history.

2007 saw Denman’s first entry into the Coral Gold Cup (the then Hennessy Gold Cup) under jockey Sam Thomas. The pair carried a hefty 11st 12lb to the line, winning by a staggering 11 lengths from Dream Alliance.

The partnership would go on to have a total of eight starts together, including Denman’s 2008 Cheltenham Gold Cup victory, which saw him win by 7 lengths from Kauto Star. Returning to Newbury Racecourse in 2009, Denman reclaimed his title in the Coral Gold Cup, making him one of only three horses to win the Coral Gold Cup twice – a title yet to be challenged. This further solidified his legacy as a horse who will forever be etched in the Newbury Racecourse Hall of Fame and in racing history.

Following on from the 2007 win, Sam Thomas returned to Newbury Racecourse to take us on a lap of the course, reliving the famed Denman victory.

Sam takes us through his memories of the day and shares tips on how to ride the course.
