Weatherbys Super Sprint Declarations

It Ain't Two - bred by former footballer Michael Owen - heads the market for the £250,000 Weatherbys Super Sprint at Newbury

The consistent It Ain’t Two heads the market in Saturday’s £250,000 Weatherbys Super Sprint at Newbury Racecourse. Nineteen two-year-olds have been declared to run in the five-furlong contest, open to horses costing less than £65,000 at the sales.

It Ain’t Two, bred by former footballer Michael Owen under his Crypto Bloodstock banner, has won two of her five career starts. She won a competitive Newmarket maiden on debut, form which has been franked with the first six home all having subsequently won races. She was last seen finishing runner up to Aesterius, fifth in the Group 2 Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot, in the Listed Dragon Stakes at Sandown when partnered by Oisin Murphy. Murphy will retain the ride on Saturday with the filly due to carry a featherweight of 8st 7lb, just one pound above his minimum riding weight.

It would be a first winner in the Weatherbys Super Sprint for trainer Hugo Palmer:

“She is in good order, and we are looking forward to it. We were going to run in the Duke of Cambridge Stakes, perhaps we should have since Arabian Dusk who finished just in front of us at Newmarket won the race, but the Super Sprint is worth a lot of money, and we got black type at Sandown, so we decided last week to run at Newbury. She got black type on similar ground, the concern would be how firm it could get in the coming days.”

The partnership of trainer Archie Watson and jockey Hollie Doyle who combined to win the race in 2022 with Eddie’s Boy are due to be represented by Vingegaard in this year’s renewal. Having won on debut in soft conditions, the son of Mehmas finished fifth in the Listed Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal Ascot. As a €55,000 yearling purchase from Goffs Orby Book 1, Vingegaard is due to carry 9st2lb.

Both Time For Sandals (H Eustace) and Caburn (J Jones) will both be lining up on Saturday as unbeaten in their sole career start. Time For Sandals will also be making her turf debut having won her maiden on the all-weather at Kempton, beating the well-bred Jouncy by a head. Caburn, a 24,000 gns purchase from Tattersalls October Book 3 yearling sale, won a Class 2 Novice at Salisbury, beating subsequent winner Brighton Boy by a neck.

The Karl Burke-trained Kaadi is one of the most experienced in the field and highest rated with an official rating of 95. A €52,000 yearling purchase from Tattersalls Ireland September yearling sale, her last two starts have come in France when finishing third and second in Listed contests on heavy and soft going. Kaadi is due to be partnered by Clifford Lee who has ridden her in all five previous career starts.

Having trained four of the last ten winners of the race, Richard Hannon Jr holds an exceptional record in the race, the concept of which was devised by his father, Richard Hannon Snr, and Lord Carnarvon. Hannon Jr will be solely represented by Miss Collada in this year’s renewal.  Having finished fourth behind Kaadi on debut, she has won her last two starts and Hannon is confident she has come on from her last run:

“Her last run at Salisbury was with a penalty and physically she has done extremely well since, she is a different filly to what she was then. Tom Marquand is going to ride. There are a few horses in there with Ascot form but I’ve found over the years that those with Ascot form can often misfire in the Super Sprint. This filly has been targeted at this race from a fair while back and she comes into the race fresh and in great form.”
